Sarasota Rowing

Big rowing news!!

Glenn Mary, CEO of US Rowing,  just announced that we have been awarded the US Rowing Masters Championships for August 2013!
This is fantastic news, this past weekend was the Florida State High School Championships, so whether you are a student, or Master, or even an Olympic want to be, head to Sarasota!

Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or accomplished rower/sculler, Sarasota has the perfect fit for you. The future 2000 Meter World Class Sprint course at Nathan Benderson Park, WorldClassRowing.com has hosted three years of Sarasota Invitational Regatta, a growing venue, where in 2011 we had many National Team participants.

Masters and youth rowing have options for everyone. Sarasota Masters Rowing Club, is 120 members strong. Having minimal dues, both recreational and competitive members row from the Blackburn Point Rd site, enjoying direct access to the calm waters of the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). Rowing north or south, hugging the shoreline of picturesque Casey Key, rowers can have a fine work out. Whether you are in a single, double, quad, or join in an 8+, you will be delighted with sightings of manatee, dolphin, spoonbill roseate, and other birds of every description. Stunning sunrises or evening sunsets are a great way to start or end you day in paradise, there is even a tiki bar across the street to unwind.

Sarasota Scullers youth row from this site as well, with many championships tucked under their spandex they have become a force to reckon with.

Sarasota Crew, a phenomenal Youth and Masters Program, is just across the bay, at the Spanish Point facility, gorgeous & shaded by 100+ year old live oaks is producing fine athletes competing at the highest levels boasting, trophies and awards with multiple championships.

Best of all, this is year round rowing, Sarasota’s Sun coast, come find your place on our water.

Sarasota Rowing Update 2/15/12

Hope you had a Happy Valentines Day.  The Deadline for the Sarasota Invitational was Feb. 14th.   I was able to introduce a rower to the ICW. A longtime rower and his first time rowing in Sarasota, which makes me think Sarasota Rowing brings us back to the essence of this paradise. Unleash the soul!

Sarasota Rowing update 2/4/2012

Sarasota rowing news, today, on the ICW, the rowing in a pair was sublime (surprised?) Ho-Hum, just another day rowing in paradise. Wildlife spotted: Roseatte Spoonbill pair taking flight over the visiting White Pelicans, with dolphin trio surfacing in the distance.

Daily gush: Rowing alongside Olympic/National Team member Jen Goldsak. She is training,  putting in 250 Kilometers a week (plus weights). So you could row roundtrip to Tampa, and still have 35 miles left over! I asked if that included a lean piece of chicken, she remarked a small chicken actually, in her super cute British accent. Jen stroked the 2x in the Beijing Olympics; the Sarasota rowing community wishes her well in the next 2012 Olympics.

Daily gripe: I can’t even imagine not being able to row here. There are other places to row, and then there is Sarasota rowing…..:)!

In other news: just 3 short weeks away is the Sarasota Invitational. The roster is filling up and entries are being added daily.

January 23rd update

Sarasota rowing today:

On the water at 615, yes it was dark(we did have bow+stern lights) the water was flat, and we heard a cheerful good morning by none other than Ted Nash one of the best rowing coaches in history, he has coached more than 50 Olympians, and  we were humbled by his presence.

Whatever you are thinking, no he was not there for us, he was preparing to coach a women's Olympic double.

So, naturally, just because he was on the shore as we pulled away in the pair, we went faster, Sarasota rowing at it's finest...

January 21st update -

Countdown...34 days to the Sarasota Invitational Regatta (Sarasota Rowing Regatta), http://sarasotainvitational.com/

The excitement is building for one of the best Masters and Youth Regattas in the country, at the ever improving Nathan Benderson Lake. Ask yourself-why not, right?!

Sarasota Masters, currently has a whopping 17 entries (well, at least we are pondering it!) Register at https://www.regattacentral.com/ and join the current registrants-but you know how rowers are, it's like herding cats and they wait until the deadline approaches!

Sarasota rowing this week on the ICW was mostly flat-glass water, a couple of chilly mornings, in the 40's most in the 50's-- leave your pogies and ice-picks at home. Naturally, if you can row around 8-830 the temp is warming towards the 70 mark. Hope to see you on the water soon-- Tamara
